Dutch Robots Step in to Build Houses Amid Severe Bricklayer Shortage

Amsterdam-based Monumental is scaling its autonomous bricklaying robots to combat housing shortages, bypassing labour deficits by operating as a subcontractor that has already built over 100 structures.
Addressing a Critical Structural Deficit
The European construction sector is facing a severe structural crisis driven by a dwindling labour pool and escalating demand. In the Netherlands, statistics from the CBS indicate that only 69,000 homes were built in 2025, falling far short of the national target of 100,000 new homes per year [1]. This shortfall is mirrored across the North Sea; in the United Kingdom, the Home Builders Federation estimates a requirement for 20,000 additional bricklayers to meet government building targets, even as only 1,990 apprenticeships were completed in 2024 [4]. The Hard-Tech Fleet and the Atrium AI Platform
To bypass these labour market constraints, Monumental—founded in 2021 by al Khafaji and CTO Sebastiaan Visser [3][4]—has engineered an autonomous, hardware-driven robotic fleet. The system comprises ‘Pisa’, the primary bricklaying robot; ‘Petra’ and ‘Panama’, autonomous material supply robots; and ‘Pathion’, a specialized connectivity device utilizing 4G, 5G, Starlink, or local WLAN to maintain site communication [3]. Managing this physical workflow is ‘Atrium’, Monumental’s proprietary AI software platform [3][6]. Atrium processes digital architectural drawings and coordinates the autonomous fleet on active construction sites, allowing multiple robots to parallelise masonry work in a way a scarce human workforce cannot [1].
De-risking Automation via Subcontracting
Rather than selling or leasing complex machinery to construction companies—which would require builders to manage maintenance and integration—Monumental operates as a subcontractor [1][3]. The startup charges clients per finished wall, absorbing the operational risks of the technology [3]. If a wall does not meet specifications, Monumental resolves the issue manually, using the on-site data to train and refine the Atrium software [1]. This risk-mitigated business model has allowed the startup to complete walls for over 100 residential buildings, alongside a school, a community centre, a hotel, and more than 150 metres of canal walls across more than 40 projects in the Netherlands and the UK [3].
Financial Scaling and Operational Acceleration
This operational traction has attracted substantial international backing. In July 2026, Monumental announced a $32 million (€27 million) Series B funding round led by US-based Khosla Ventures, with participation from existing investors Plural and Hummingbird [1][4]. The financial runway has triggered a rapid acceleration in construction output. Monumental’s construction volume in the first half of 2026 was 39% higher than its entire output for 2025, with second-quarter output in 2026 rising 84% compared to the first quarter [3]. The company completed nearly 50 homes in the three months leading up to 15 July 2026, compared to just eight homes in the preceding quarter [6]—representing an operational increase of 525% in quarterly home completions.
